二〇〇五年九月末，当西胁常记先生公开表明将提前一年从京都大学退休之时，我身在中国西安。包括我在内，先生的几位学生提议：作为退休记念事业，应按惯例举行“最终讲义”，并编集出版退休记念论文集。然而，起初先生婉言回绝了这项提议。后来，在周围不断的热情劝说之下，先生终于点头同意，并表示：“如果每位参与者都能怀有一份真挚而轻松的心情”。
