“本体论”一词已成为今日中国学术界极为时髦的一个名词，魏晋、特别是宋明以来，“本体”一词在中国古代典籍中早已较为常见。如果仅用该词来形容中国古代关于“本体”的学问，是不会有什么争议的。但是问题恰恰出在，近代以来，人们已经习惯于认为该词是对一个英文单词ontology的中文译称，于是产生这样一种流行的见解：ontoloy即中国古代人关于“本体”（道体）的学问。
